Massage Therapy and Facial Delights – CALM’s Holistic Approach

The healing properties of massage therapy, and the belief in its medicinal benefits, dates back thousands of years where archaeological evidence and written records can be traced back to ancient civilisations in China, Egypt, and India.

Today, the use of massage is renowned for its relaxing and rejuvenating qualities, where the stresses, strains and tension of everyday busy life can be relieved by the therapeutic touch – helping to unwind and re-energise.

Importantly, massage therapy also promotes a range of physical and psychological benefits to enhance overall health and wellbeing too.

Different massage techniques and products can be used to effectively treat a variety of health conditions. This includes reducing pain, muscle soreness and tension often experienced by arthritis and fibromyalgia sufferers, post injury, or during pregnancy.

Massages can improve circulation and immune function by encouraging lymphatic drainage and releasing toxins. And massage therapy can also help to relieve depression and anxiety, lower blood pressure, and promote good sleep management.

Spoilt for Choice

With so many different CALM treatments to choose from, you may be wondering which treatments would best suit you, or where to start! To help you decide, we’ve compiled a brief overview of some of the treatments we’re often asked about, whilst also giving you an update on some of our newest CALM treatments available and coming soon.

Hot and Cold Stone Therapy

The use of heated stones for healing is an ancient practise dating back thousands of years and involves aligning smooth, heated stones on multiple healing acupressure points across the body before employing massage techniques using the stones and hands, to heal and relax the body.

The treatment includes deep massage techniques with soothing oils and helps to induce deep relaxation, alleviate stress and physical pain, whilst also promoting emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Cooled stones can also be applied to the facial area, to help invigorate and refresh. Additionally, this can help to reduce any puffiness or redness and can help to tone both muscles and skin – leaving you feeling grounded and cleansed.

Our CALM therapist, Paula Richards, a qualified beauty therapist with a background in nursing spanning over 24 years, offers a variety of bespoke Hot and Cold Stone therapy treatments across our Burton and Derby studios - utilising hot stones and selected crystals along the seven main chakras of the body, to re-align the body’s energy flow and restore balance and harmony.

Paula has a keen interest in the physiological and psychological benefits of massage and relaxing treatments and also offers a variety of aromatherapy massages, Swedish massages, facials, and Indian Head Massages across our studios.

Indian Head Massage

Originating in India thousands of years ago as part of the ancient Indian healing practise of Ayurveda (based on balancing the body, mind, and spirit) Indian Head massages provide a gentle massage focusing on the areas of the head, scalp, face, neck, shoulders, and upper back.

This wonderful, relaxing massage is performed while you are seated and the use of oils during the treatment are optional, depending on which treatment you select. For non-oil head massages, light clothing can be worn throughout, making it an ideal treatment to take during your lunch time break.

The treatment uses acupressure massage to release stress, clear energy pathways, and balance the chakras. Stimulating circulation in the upper body, our CALM Indian Head Massage treatment will also help to detoxify the body, boost overall immunity, and provide tension relief - which can include finding relief from headaches, migraines neck or back pain.

Our Indian Head massages are performed by Paula and our newest member of the team, Inderjit Bola, who specialises in Ayuvedic massage therapies.

Hot Mineral Massages

Heat therapy has many natural health benefits – acting as an effective pain relief to help relieve muscle tension and discomfort, promoting relaxation, and improving sleep quality.

CALM’s Heavenly Hot Poultice Massage uses Dead Sea salts, carefully wrapped and warmed in muslin poultices to deliver a relaxing and warming, exfoliating massage to help ease tense muscles.

We also offer Hot Himalayan Salt Rock body treatments, where heart shaped Himalayan Salt rocks, known for their detoxifying, rebalancing and revitalising properties, are gently warmed before being applied to the skin as part of the massage treatment, helping to relieve tired and painful joints and muscles.

Both treatments, offered by award winning CALM therapist, Hayley Davies, are rich in natural, pure minerals, helping to replenish and increase the body’s natural mineral levels as well as leaving the body and mind deeply relaxed. And as an added bonus - when the treatments have finished, you can take home the poultices or heart salt rocks used in your session to reuse again at home at your leisure!

Hayley uses products known for their natural mineral healing properties and offers a range of treatments and massages across both our CALM studios, including specialist pregnancy massages, Swedish massages, facials, and some of our newer treatments too.

Stretch and Align

Our latest CALM treatment, Stretch and Align, is a stress and tension releasing treatment combining a series of yoga moves, sports massage, Swedish massage and physio alignment techniques.

Available from CALM therapist and qualified Yoga teacher, Hayley, the session incorporates a series of yoga stretching movements combined with an upper and lower body massage, where multiple muscle groups are treated together using the varied massage techniques to help alleviate any built up stress and tension.

The treatment uses bioactive organic oils rich in antioxidants and vitamins, to help replenish and nourish the skin and promises to leave you feeling relaxed and renewed.

Lomi Lomi

Our soon to be released Lomi Lomi massage is definitely one to look out for! A unique healing massage originally brought to Hawaii by ancient Polynesian settlers, Lomi Lomi has been passed down through the generations and is renowned for its amazing relaxation, recuperation, and healing properties.

Working on the principle that memories are stored not only in the mind but also in the cells of the human body too, the Lomi Lomi massage is designed to help the body let go of its old patterns and behaviours - releasing any stresses, strains, and muscle tension. It also helps to release energy blockages, helping to balance physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.

Known as the ‘loving hands’ massage, the long continuous strokes of this full body massage are given in fluid, rhythmic motions, working deep into the muscles and nourishing the skin. And with different parts of the body being massaged at the same time, the Lomi Lomi experience is described by many as feeling like gentle relaxing waves moving over the body.
