What to expect from your first class

What to expect from your first class

Are you new to yoga and contemplating enrolling in yoga classes? If so, then deep breaths and keep calm. Below we explain what to expect from your first yoga class

The yoga mat

The only thing you need to bring to your first yoga class is yourself, and perhaps a change of clothes and a water bottle. There's no need to worry about bringing a yoga mat, as we supply mats for all classes. However, it may be a good idea for you to purchase a yoga mat so that you can practise at home.

What to wear in the yoga studio

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable. Clothes need to be able to stretch with you and to not restrict your movements. It's best not to wear baggy clothes as some yoga poses are performed while bending down, so baggy clothes will ride up, exposing skin and potentially getting in the way.

No need for trainers

Yoga is performed in bare feet. No trainers or socks are needed. Although you can wear socks, bare feet is best as you create a more stable base for poses, and the yoga trainer can better see your feet and help you to achieve the correct stance.

Movement and routine

Many beginners worry that they aren't flexible enough for yoga, having seen super flexible people on television. This is simply not true. Over time you will become more flexible, but the trainer will work with you and your body so that you can move comfortably. The class will start with a gentle warm-up and end with relaxation. All of the class is guided and you simply need to listen to instructions and your body.

When to arrive

It's always best to arrive at least fifteen minutes before the class starts. You'll be able to meet your instructor, familiarise yourself with the yoga studio and introduce yourself to others. This familiarity will help you to feel more comfortable and to relax.

It's social and fun

The most important thing is to remember is that yoga is meant to be relaxing. It takes you away from the stress and worry of the real world, so enjoy your yoga experience.
